Dr. Lori says:
This week, we considered some antiques where flowers dominate. Floral symbolism is a longstanding aspect of art and decorative art history and often, recognizing a flower can help you identify the origin of a work of art or antique. The five pedal
flower carved into colonial period (circa late 1700s and early 1800s) case furniture and tall clocks indicates that the piece was a work from Philadelphia, PA.This highly recognizable bloom signified a piece from the city of Brotherly Love and indicated a work of high quality. A good quality Philadelphia highboy by one of the prominent cabinetmakers of the day such as Thomas Affleck or Benjamin Randolph would sell in the range of $300,000 to $600,000 in good condition. If you found one of those pieces you'd come out smelling like a rose! So, look for and learn about flowers and you may find a valuable antique in the process. Submit your question , images, and
related stories for consideration on a future show or bring your art and antiques to one of Dr.
Lori's appraisal programs throughout the CBS 3
TV viewing area.
