Exhibition Catalogue - Traveling Exhibit From Realism to Non-Objectivity: Contemporary Art from New York to Philadelphia Furlong Gallery From Realism to Non-Objectivity: Contemporary Art from New York to Philadelphia surveys the dynamism and diversity that defines contemporary American art. With selected works by some of the most respected and influential artists working today, this show concentrates on the post-modern interest in the abstract as well as the actual. Realistic and representational art is displayed alongside non-objective, direct works in a manner similar to the way in which artists work in their studios in major American cities. Artists create art in vastly different styles and address varied subject matter while uniting under the umbrella of contemporary painting and sculpture. The all encompassing link is the high quality art and the artists' dedication to the discipline. As noted by author, art historian and curator, Dr. Lori, "This show features American art as it has evolved since the post-war era (circa 1945). The artistic results reflect that our culture is clearly at ease with diversity, retains a keen understanding of the impact of the visual, and joyously embraces variety and quality in fine art." Ron DeLong Mixed media artist and art educator, Ron DeLong has produced a body of work that draws upon his projects with children's art on an international scale. His paintings and works on paper focus on uniting visual symbols from various cultures with the stimulating style of American Pop Art. DeLong has taught extensively, held positions in the creative arts, and devotes his time to mixed media art and children's causes. View exhibition checklist of works by Ron DeLong. Education: Frank Lind
Frank Lind has taught painting at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY for much of his illustrious career. Currently serving as dean of the prestigious art school, Lind's artwork derives from the contrasts of his urban surroundings and the allure of the placid sea. Lind's artistic vision is expansive and he consistently executes stunning paintings of the sea from his daily relationship with urban chaos. Visually, he points to the serenity found by the sea and memory remains crucial for Lind. The paintings show Lind's clarity of presentation and demonstrate that strong visual appeal is vital to contemporary art. View exhibition checklist of works by Frank Lind. Education:
Vincent Romaniello's painting solutions exist at the core of his art. They demonstrate art as a progression, art as an icon, and art as a symbol. His work shows his appreciation for beauty in contemporary art. Like the masters of the Renaissance, Romaniello looks to history for models as he described his work: "... the arts reached great heights with the Renaissance, and in the last century, artists challenged restrictive thinking and experimented with new forms of artistic expression. My work seeks to merge the two." Romaniello unites non-objectivity with the figure and allows the viewer to participate in the imagery and the emotion of his paintings. Education:
Rudy Serra's monotype prints represent the same tension and direct approach as his sculptures. Dealing with the nature of materials in both his sculpture and his prints, Serra produces works that denote biomorphic shapes and expressive color. Showing his respect for Abstract Expressionism, Serra's works are chaotic, controlled, luscious, and lively. Rudy Serra has taught modern and contemporary art and sculpture at Rutgers University, University of Connecticut, and Bennington College. He often speaks of artists who have informed his work including his older brother, Richard Serra and his longtime friend and colleague, sculptor Mark di Suvero. Jeanne Wilkinson Jeanne Wilkinson's imagery reflects the direct approach of Abstract Expressionism, the color theories of the American modernists, and the serenity of the minimalists. While many of art history's movements and reactions inform the work of this artist, teacher, and art critic, Wilkinson's vast knowledge of the process of art assist in her ability to convey emotion and expression to viewers through her work. Much of her work recalls the forms and symbols of ancient art, the dynamism of the baroque, and the complimentary color unions of the Post-impressionists and the Fauves. John David Wissler
John David Wissler's work unites form and color through landscape and still life compositions that remind the viewer of the enjoyment of handling pigment. Nature as a subject is of great interest to Wissler and the juxtaposition of warm and cool colors are, by his hand and in his art, as closely related as two peas in a pod. The icy blue waters of winter are somehow appropriate when Wissler paints them against a fire orange mountainside. A fine colorist, Wissler is reminded of the romanticism of the 19th century and the great colorists of the last one hundred years in art history. Mark Wonsidler Using nature as both his inspiration and medium, Mark Wonsidler transforms natural material into sculpture. His mixed media pieces explore the questions of human scale, immediacy, and innate beauty. Wonsidler's sculptures show his knowledge of history, culture, and literature. The decidedly inspirational pieces prompt viewers to engage themselves in the artwork and ask and answer questions of themselves and the world around them.
