Hoffman
and His Circle
Harry Leslie Hoffman was born in Cressona, PA and attended Gettysburg College and Yale University. He studied at the Yale School of Art under John F. Weir and later worked with the artists of the Old Lyme, Connecticut artist colony including Frank Dumond, Childe Hassam, Henry Ward Ranger, Clark Voorhees, Arthur Heming and Mahonri Young.
In 1905, Hoffman had a one man show at the American Art Association in Paris and returned to New York and Old Lyme, CT. By 1906, Hoffman rejoined the artist colony at Old Lyme and took residency at Florence Griswold’s house and later established his own home and studio there. Hoffman worked within the circle of some of the
most important American Impressionists in the history of art.
Hoffman studied, painted, and traveled extensively, honeymooning and painting in Spain, painting and producing watercolors in Nassau, the Bahamas, as well as other exotic locations. He married Beatrice Pope, an established photographer in her own right, in
1910 and the couple resided in Connecticut.
