Background

Clarence H. Carter (1904-2000) was born in Portsmouth, Ohio in 1904 and lived in Bucks County, Pennsylvania for most of his mature career.  A 1926 graduate of the Cleveland School of Art, Carter was a member of the National Academy of Design and studied with Hans Hoffman on the isle of Capri, Italy. Carter lived in Italy from 1927 to 1928.

After studying abroad with some of the most influential artists of the day, Carter taught at Carnegie Mellon University in the 1930s and 1940s. During the Depression era, he was in charge of WPA art projects in Cleveland, OH and established himself as an important figure in the American art scene. 

Carter’s works are traditional representational paintings featuring traditional subjects like landscapes, seascapes, and portraits with a flair for the modern.

His works are included in the Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY, Montclair Art Museum, Montclair, NJ, The Butler Institute of American Art, Youngstown, OH, Victoria and Albert Museum, London, England, the Corcoran Art Gallery, Washington, DC, the National Museum of American Art, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Philadelphia, PA.
