Post-Impressionism

The artists of Post-Impressionism are among the best known names of European art. With the rise of the cities and the factory workers taking up residence in cities following the Industrial Revolution, establishments like the Moulin Rouge became more and more popular. Frequent patrons of the famous Moulin Rouge, artists such as Toulouse Lautrec and others became important artists and surveyors of culture.

Vincent Van Gogh, Paul Gauguin

Other artists within the post-impressionist circle include Vincent Van Gogh, Paul Gauguin, and even, Paul Cezanne. They share a dedication to a strong color palette and an interest in the impact of photography on painting in the last decade of the 19th century.

Jane AvrilToulouse Lautrec was reared from an affluent family, but suffered a physical disability early in his life. He was trained in the arts and enjoyed the company of the patrons of the Moulin Rouge as well as the bohemian lifestyle embraced there.

Producing some of his most famous paintings in the early years of the 1890s, Toulouse was enamored with a dancer at the Moulin Rouge named Jane Avril. He painted her many times and often included her in genre scenes of the bar with proper English gentlemen and other members of the Moulin Rouge community. His promotional graphic arts works made Avril famous far beyond the confines of the French bar scene.
